Quality is #1...I so agree with Mark's comment.
Quality is #1
I am pubbed through three different small presses and I read work from them as well as that of my Romance Writers of America colleagues. There is a treasure trove of good work out there. A novel does not have to be published via the 'Big Six' to be unforgettable.
All that said, indie publishing (self publishing) is another wonderful option for those who do not mind having complete control over their work. As with all freedom, there is responsibility inherent. One must get a smashing book cover image, edit the work to polish and format it for the medium (not everyone's cuppa tea)
This year I am personally investing in a self publishing journey--a series of short stories offered for 99 cents each, that looks into the lives of the residents of one block of Notting Hill (London) flats and their path toward what matters most--love. Each is set around a different holiday.

It is so far an incredible journey. 55 Portobello Road series will be tied up in an eight story bow by November. Maybe all in an anthology for the Holidays.

Each author's path is different, but the many publishing venues and opportunities today are awesome!

Regards,

Christine London

A-Z Challenge "I" is for Ice Cream (http://christinelondon.com/i-is-for-ice-cream )
Christine's Amazon Author Central Page: http://tinyurl.com/ccq2or8
Tweet sweet with her: https://twitter.com/ChristineLondon
Fan a FB Page of Christine-isms: http://tinyurl.com/bunvanf
Christine Londonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16241115024592807621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-556528429571644528.post-49871129415530137302013-04-10T12:51:58.447-04:002013-04-10T12:51:58.447-04:00I have bought from small publishers before and nev...I have bought from small publishers before and never regretted it.
