Question of the Month

I'm back from my vacation/son's wedding just in time for this month's Question  of the Month, invented by Michael G. D'Agostino, owner of the blog, A Life Examined. You can sign up for this once monthly blog hop here. The question this month is tough one.

“If your parent or child committed a major crime, would you turn them in?”

Now there's a tough one. For of all, I would try really, really hard to get my loved one to turn himself or herself in. One of the things that make this decision so difficult is expense of legal defense, the horrible things that happen in prisons, and my personal doubts about the justice in our justice system. Given all those things, I would like to say I would turn them in if they wouldn't do it themselves, but if the situation actually arose? This would be really difficult if it was one of my children. The need to protect and defend one's children runs deep.

If you think you would like to join in this interesting blog hop, stop over and visit Michael and sign up.

Also don't forget that this Wednesday if the IWSG monthly blog hop. Share your insecurities with us or perhaps share how you overcame an insecurity.

An interesting blog I've been enjoying lately is Strong Women in History. The latest installment is about Elisabeth Bing who helped spread the idea of natural childbirth as recommended by Dr. Lamaze to the entire world. Her back story is inspiring.

The wedding was terrific! As mother of the groom, I managed to blink back all my joyful tears as I had promised my son I wouldn't cry. The family had fun together on the beach with only one possibly cracked rib and sprained finger from making diving football catches into the waves. Boys! They never stop playing. I promise a picture on Wednesday.

I'm still catching up on emails. There's lots going on and I feel like I've been off the planet for four days. Our resort had a very poor internet connection and it refused to load Gmail. Frustrating but there was barely time for it anyway.

Can you answer Michael's question? If you have children, did you go with the natural method of childbirth? (Had 4 C-sections myself.) Is it really August already?

Ouch to the cracked rib, those are no fun. Glad the wedding was good though, and yeah, a tough one turning kids in indeed

The wedding sounds wonderful! So good of you to be able to make it through without tears too! I'm not sure I could do that :)

Yes I would turn in a child, as much as I love them, if they did do a major crime. If they did it once, could they do it again and could it escalate into something bigger? So as hard as it would be, I would turn them in.

I have little faith in our correctional system--many people come out worse.

Congratulations on your son's marriage.

Yeh on the vacation and the wedding!

Such a great "what if?" question! It would depend on so many things, could go so many different ways....

This really is a tough questions, isn't it? Because we really don't know what we'd do or what the crime would be.

I'm glad the wedding was great. And good for you for holding back tears. My brother got married this month last year and my mom cried. I even teared up. :)

I'm glad the wedding went well. Welcome back. :-)

Diving football injuries aside, glad to hear the wedding went well!

I don't think I could turn in a family member, but it depends on the crime and circumstances, too. Thank goodness none of my family members are murderers, I guess. :)

I blogged about the criminal-in-the-family question as well. Not an easy decision, but I haven't seen anyone who would refuse yet! As for giving birth, I'm surprised they didn't have "I (heart) my epidural" t-shirts available at the hospital gift store.

I blogged about this question as well. It would probably be emotional, but I'd turn in a family member if it was a serious crime.

Anne Gallagher said...

I think it would depend on the crime. As you said, the justice in our justice system is off kilter.

Yes, I had a C-section (emergency -- no choice).

Yes, it is August.

I'm conflicted on this one. And unless it actually happened to me, I'm not sure I can answer the question. So many variables: who did the crime? what was it? which would be better, law punishment or living with remorse? Have to think on this one.

The need to protect my kids wars against whatever bad parenting I did to have them commit a serious crime. I'm completely for my kid having to pay for whatever poor actions she's done, but I've only really thought about it on a small scale until now.
Congrats on the successful wedding!
I labored naturally at home, haha, but got an epidural once at the hospital and had to have my water broken. Don't know if I could do it again naturally. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but that pain was near blackout level for me.

Don't know yet if the rib is cracked. Maybe the kid is just a whiner.

Putting it another way, I hope you never have to make the choice.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Holding back the tears was the hardest part, betty. But I did it.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

I agree, Lee. There is no rehab going on in the prison system.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

It was a great time, Madeline.

I almost always cry at weddings but somehow I held it back.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Thanks, Misha.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

LOL, none of our family are murderers either unless they're really good at getting away with it.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Yeah, Tamara, I had an epidural when I was struggling with labor before my sections. Great things.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

It would be a really hard thing to do.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Yeah, Anne, my first two C-sections turned into emergencies. Doctor said don't even try vaginal births for the next two.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

The crime and the intent would make a big difference, Lee, to me too. Hope I never have to decide.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Giving birth isn't for the faint of heart. Epidural are a great invention.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

I'll second that, Jo. Pray that it is never.

I was wondering about that whole parental sense of protection. The love a parent has for their child has fascinated me for a while.

I saw that question the other day and thought it was interesting. I don't think I could ever ignore a crime.

Congrats to your son and his wife!

I missed this months "Question" If any of mine committed a really serious crime I would report them, but the mother part of me would stand by their side through any proceedings that may occur.

True, boys never stop playing and thank goodness for that.

I would like to say that I would turn them in, if they don't do it themselves, but deep down, honesty compels me to say that I probably won't. I am not sure if it is due to the lack of faith in the justice system or the maternal instinct to protect my own, or both. :(

Glad to hear you had a great time at the wedding. :)
