IWSG: July 2017 Edition

Wow, we're more than halfway through the year. Where did the time go? And it's the first Wednesday of the month so it's time to share our insecurities and offer encouragement to each other. Many thanks to Alex J. Cavanaugh who started this wonderful group. You can join and receive all the wonderful benefits of being a member. Find other members of the group or sign up here.

What are those benefits? There are too many to name, but lots of people believe in IWSG as proven by IWSG being selected as one of The 101 Best Websites for Writers. Congrats to everyone who put in so much hard work for this to happen.

Don't forget about the #IWSGPit coming up at the end of July. Get your pitch ready.

Today's question: What is one valuable lesson you've learned since you started writing?

It's tough to pick just one but I have learned over the years how generous writers are to each other. They help each other. They share advice and give of their time. We may write alone but it's not really a lonely job unless you want it to be.

My latest book is no available on Amazon. This if the first time I've stepped into dystopian territory. The Survivors of the Apocalypse Series is set 300 years after a plague wipes out 99% of humanity. A city of a few thousand is protected by a dome while outside in the wilderness, a small number or people live who were immune to the disease. Now the city people are running out of resources and desperation sets in. Who decides who lives and who dies? Can the outsiders be the secret to finding a Hunter's Exiled Lady opens the trilogy when two outsiders come upon a small group of people exiled from the city. Even if the exiles somehow survive the plague, they must adjust to the dangerous frontier life outside the city walls.

The little getaway for my husband and I last week was great fun. Until we got home and he discovered he'd been bitten by something, probably a spider. Doctor visits and some harsh antibiotics later and he's on the mend. July 4th was fun at the house. Burgers on the grill and the children playing games. By children I mean my grown children.

Yippee for Killjoys coming back on last week also. I also caught up on Zoo before season 3 started last week. It gets stranger and stranger. Gotta love that. And the countdown is on to the return of Game of Thrones. Yes, the science fiction and fantasy shows are my favorites.

Did you see any good fireworks for the 4th? Is your Twitter pitch ready? Do you enjoy Zoo or Killjoys? Ever have trouble with a bug bite?

  2. That sounds like a tense dystopian. The latest book DLP signed is a dystopian and I find I'm really enjoying the genre.

Spider bites can be nasty and scary if you don't know what kind of spider.

  3. Yes, the writing community is very supportive. I love that about being a writer too. Congrats on your book, release. Sorry about your husband's spider bite. Glad he's okay.

  6. Agreed on the generosity of the writing community - the BEST!

I adore Killjoys!! One of my absolute favourite shows. Dark Matter too :)

  7. Congratulations!
This writing community is the most generous in the world.

  8. Sounds like a great dystopian read. Blah to bites, that can turn out nasty indeed. Writers sure are grand across the land.

  9. Mosquitos are eating me alive. That's annoying, but the scary bugs around here are ticks. Not only do I get to worry about Lyme disease, but there's another illness--Powassan--that will leave you brain-damaged if it doesn't kill you. Good gravy!

  10. Congrats on the new book—and the new genre. That's great! Wishing you much success with it!

Glad to hear your husband's on the mend, and I, too, am counting down to Game of Throne's return. :)

  11. Grats on the release! Normally, a friend sets off fireworks at his house, but didn't have any this year. So I had to scramble last minute (like 10:15 PM last night) to get something for my children (ages 6 and 3) something they could enjoy.

Hope your husband gets better quickly!

  12. I was surprised and pleased to find out how much I can depend on writers when I need help. As to bug bites, I've been a smorgasbord for some tiny critters lately, and I look like I have a odd case of measles from all the red spots.

  13. It took me a while to learn how wonderful other writers were too and to ask for help when I needed. :) My mom got bit two years ago by a spider on her head and scratched at the bite. It got infected and ballooned. Her head looked like a mushroom!

  14. I've heard of writers thinking they are in competition with other writers and that surprises me. We are such a great support system for each other. We should help out other writers, because we're in this together. :)

  15. Hello Susan,
I've had so much support from fellow writers. Amen and Hallelujah! This week I'm beta reading for two ladies I've only met online, and their feedback on my WIPs has been invaluable. As for bug bites, I seem to be delicious. Let's hope readers one day find my work just as tasty. Happy July to you!

  16. Writers are very generous Susan and i think it's because we know about the blood, sweat and tears involved whether physical or metaphorical. Sorry to hear about he tricky bug bite. I hope he feels better soon. I did see some lovely fireworks on a lake over the weekend with my family. Have a great rest of your week :)

Glad to hear about the fun in life going on, and I'm really sorry about the bug bite - my daughter had one of those a week ago - an infected, scary mess cured by antibiotics.

  19. Hi Susan, congratulations on your book release! I've heard of some icky horror stories within some writing circles but every writer I've come into contact with has been lovely and helpful. It's been (cyber) hugs, high-fives and fist-pumps all round!

  20. It has been lovely to see how much writers help each other and want each other to succeed. A great benefit of making connections. Congrats on your latest release. It sounds great!

  22. Never had trouble myself but Matt was bitten by a spider (we think) a number of years ago and he too had to have shots every day for a while. Not funny, pretty dangerous actually.

Congratulations on the new book, sounds like I would enjoy it.

  26. Congrats on the new book! I still have it in my plans to read one of your books and review it on the blog. Hopefully by the time this year ends!

I'm not sure about Zoo this year. I'm giving it another week or two before I decide if I'm committing to the whole season or not. Some things have to come more together for me.

Ick on your husband's spider bite; glad the getaway was a good one though and good that he got checked out by the doctor!

We didn't go to any firework displays this year. I think we got out of the habit of going since when we still had our dog, he hated fireworks so we would stay home to comfort him. Now we got to get back into the swing of things.

  27. Hi Susan,

Glad to hear you had a fun fourth... sorry about your hubby. Yes, I had been by a spider bit on my brow. Left a major scar. Aweful thing. I am always bitten by some type of bug. Lately I am welting up more that usual. The lumps take DAYS to go away. Now I am using Benedryl cream which is really helping speed up the process.

Yes, looking forward to the Twitter pitch. I'll use the same on that worked on the Knight Agency Agent... hopefully I will get picked again and this time land an agent... fingers crossed....

  31. I happen to be suffering the effects of mosquito bites on my feet thanks to wearing sandals while watching the fireworks. Congrats on the new book!

  36. Congrats on the release! And yes to writers being so supportive - that wasn't something I ever expected when starting this writing thing.

Um, I haven't heard of Killjoys or Zoo. I'm sure I'm missing out.

  37. Stepped into dystopian territory? Susan, you are so brave. But then, you probably have years of writing experience under your belt, so you know what you're doing. Good luck with this new genre.

  38. I can't wait for Game of Thrones, even though I'm very afraid for so many of the characters. I wonder what Jaime will think of what Cersei has done...
