Thanks to our mastermind and creator, Alex J. Cavanaugh, this group is getting stronger every month. This blog hop is to share our insecurities, support each other and network with other writers. Find the entire list on the IWSG blog or join in the fun on our Facebook page. This month is special in that we'll all be introducing ourselves all over again. With so many new members, we don't all know each other as well as we could. Find the entire list on this IWSG page.
I write high fantasy as Susan Gourley with two different series contracted and in various stages of publications. Using the pen name, Susan Kelley, I write science fiction romance with ten books published. As part of the IWSG staff, I'm proud to have been part of The IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond. I retired from teaching high school to write full time and make my home in the country where my husband and I have raised five sons and one daughter. I mostly blog about writing with a few other tidbits thrown in for some variety.
If you're a blogger and writer, being part of IWSG is very low stress. One post per month where you can pour your heart out to those who understand. Once per month when you can ask questions and get lots of advice coming back your way.
As writers, all of us like to read. I've seen quite a few blog posts lately where writers talk about how their reading habits have changed since they started writing. Almost all have become more picky about how they use the precious hours when they squeeze in reading time. Some have narrowed their reading lists to books in the genre they're writing while others have found enjoyment in a wider range of genres. Some find they're distracted by pacing, grammatical mistakes or shallow characters more than before they took up the pen themselves.
I personally have become pickier in what I read. A book really must capture my interest in the first two or three chapters or I'll put it aside for the next one on the list. I'm pretty forgiving of a few editing errors also though shallow characters can ruin a book quicker than anything else. I have always read a variety of genres and being a writer hasn't changed that one bit.
I think being a professional of something does influence your enjoyment of other's work. If you're an excellent cook, aren't you more judgmental in a restaurant than I would be? If you are a proficient musician, you would hear mistakes in a musical production a tin ear like me wouldn't notice. Embrace the changes your writing career has made in your reading habits. And with the new year, lots of publishers and authors are offering discounted books to fill those new devices with.
Has writing made you a pickier writer? Are you an expert cook, musician, seamstress or other skill that heightens or lessens your enjoyment of the craft as done by others? Are you sharing a brief intro today?

Good Bye 14
It was a very good year. I wrote four complete science fiction romance novels (all around 80K) in 2014 and received contracts for all of them. One of them turned into my bestselling book ever. I found a publisher to reissue my first epic fantasy series and I polished up the second book in my other fantasy series and that publisher contracted it for a 2015 release.
I was part of the IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond book venture. It was an amazing experience and a super reference book was borne from it. It's free if you haven't downloaded your copy yet.
I was asked to be secretary of the state-wide writers' organization I belong to. Don't know all the duties involved yet, but I'm excited to be part of it.
The A to Z Blogging Challenge is going to be great again this year. And for the first time, I'll be one of the administrators of the biggest deal in the blogging world. It's giving the word challenge an entirely larger meaning for me. Hope I survive.
My plans for this year is to write at least four more books and if I can, a fifth one also. I'm also committed to keeping my blog active but have accepted how much time it takes. One of the things I will be doing is having more guests here on my blog and paying some visits to others. Most of my guests will appear on Fridays. I'm excited about the great information these experienced authors and industry professionals will be sharing with my readers.
"I never think of the future. It comes soon enough." Albert Einstein
But unlike that brilliant guy, most of us do think about the future in so many personal and professional ways. In the next two months I'll be talking about some new releases and hopefully getting a lot of writing done.
Was 2014 a good year for you? Are you thinking about the future or are you in Albert's camp? What is your greatest challenge coming up in the next year?

Friday Before the Season
I never do any Christmas decorating before the first weekend in December. So that means I'll start tomorrow or maybe Sunday. The tree won't go up until a few days before Christmas when my daughter is home to help. Shopping ... not really started. And most will be done online.
Tomorrow I'll be enjoying myself at my local writers' group holiday party. Mostly a lot of eating, laughing and just enjoying each other's company. The rest of the weekend and the start of next week will be filled with edits from my new publisher, Musa, who will be releasing my previously publishing titles from the series, The Futhark Chronicles. Book one is coming out in February.
Some wisdom from the Old Farmer's Almanac:
It is unlucky to say "wolf" in December.
"Don't talk about yourself. It will done when you leave." Wilson Mizner
Hopefully, you've downloaded your free copy of The IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond already. If not, what are you waiting for? Thanks to all the wonderful bloggers who gave the book a shout-out.
The Tolkien quote today is one I'm keeping at the forefront of my thoughts as I consider all the things I need to accomplish in the next few weeks including working on my newest book.
"It's the job that's never started that takes the longest to finish." J.R.R. Tolkien
Don't forget Sunday is Pearl Harbor Day. Though it was well before my time, my father and all my uncles enlisted shortly after that day. Our family was fortunate that they all came home but so many of that generation did not.
Hope you have a great weekend. Did you get THE guide to writing this week? Have you said 'wolf' this month yet? Have a job that you're putting off? Did you decorate for Christmas yet or start shopping?

Frantic Friday
Are you doing Black Friday shopping? Are you crazy? Hopefully, you're home like me in the warm thinking about shopping online. If you have a moment, check out my post at the A to Z blog. I'd appreciate some company over there.
One of the things I like about this day is no cooking. Lots of leftovers to be had. I'll probably drag out some Christmas decorations but otherwise, I'm going to work on my writing and preparing for the release on Monday of The IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond. Don't miss it.
With the start of holiday shopping, I expect lots of new electronic devices will be gifted to deserving persons. Like most writers, I hope the new owners fill their device with books. I hope they use all those Amazon, iTunes, and Barnes and Noble gift cards to buy my books. How will I convince them.
Getting 'found' is a conundrum. There are so many books out there and many platforms to buy them from. Most small press authors like me make the majority of their sales on e-books. In the USA, Amazon sells around 50% of digital books. Nook captures 15-20% as does Apple. Kobo and others split the rest. Kobo is based in Canada and actually edges Amazon out on their home ground. How does one get noticed among the millions of books available on each of those retail sites?
Were you expecting an answer? I have no understanding of why some of my books have been bestsellers and others not so much. I'm taking the advice of many to just keep writing and telling the best story I can. And check out the ideas on promotion found in the IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond. Learn how to use social media to grow your readership and some other unique ideas to market your work.
