I Wanna Be a Movie Quote

If your family is like mine, they have an entire repertoire of movie quotes they spout when the situation calls for a clever come back. They seem to have entire movies memorized. A Few Good Men contributes a few the most common, "You can't handle the truth!"

Many of my personal favorites are gleaned from The Princess Bride. I won't insult my audience by reminding them since I know so many of you use them also. Well except for one I must mention. I have three sons, two stepsons and an active husband, I seem to constantly be telling them to enjoy themselves as they go off to play golf together or watch a sporting event. But I can't just say have fun, I usually tell them, "Have fun storming the castle, boys."

Independence Day produces lost of favorites. "Welcome to Earth." "Do your stuff, take them out, take them down...." "We will not go quietly into the night...."

My oldest son's teaching job during his first few years included being in charge of the In-School suspension room. He added a quote to his signature when he sent email around to other teachers. "I am the Law!" Judge Dredd.

What quotes fit into your family or your workplace? Do the people around you recognize them when you use them? Any you've picked up from recent movies?

  1. Movie quotes we say at our house? Let me explain. No, no, it's too much. Let me sum up...

  2. Oh, gosh. We must do that all the time.

I can't think of any right now except one.

"Nuke'm from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." (Aliens)

The Princess Bride quotes run rampant at our house too. After a hard day at work, we're 'mostly dead' (but not all dead).

  3. I quote the Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension at every opportunity. My husband laughs and the kids look at me like I'm weird.

  4. We quote a lot of Monty Python. "I'm not quite dead yet."

  5. That is too funny! My son and brother are always saying "Have fun storming the castle," among other Princess Bride quotes.

  6. This is common practice in my house, my family, and wife's family. My favorite one of all? "If someone asks if you're a god, you say ... YES!" Can you guess the movie? :)

  8. My family has "The Hunt for Red October" memorized.

My significant other and I often reference "The Princess Bride", "Sneakers" and "Undercover Blues"

At work, I often answer questions posed to me with Joss Whedon references. No one gets them.

  9. One of my faves is 'don't mention the war' episode of Fawlty Towers' fame, complete with 'goose-steps'.

Whenever we have to remember to avoid something with certain people, we say, 'don't mention the 'war'.

    "Ack!Ack!" cheesy Martians.
    "We'll always have Paris."(Casablanca)

So yeah, we all like our movies, and if it's a good quote, why not?

  11. The ones used in our family are from Fawlty Towers too! As well as the 'don't mention the war' quote we often say 'you snobs!'
Or feel the need to whack our cars with a branch.
Or say 'it's alright, he's from Barcelona'

    Classics! Great topic x

  12. Oh, and one more I've just remembered. There are a pair of us at work and neither of us can get away with saying the word terrible without the other one breaking into 'you're terrible Muriel!'

  13. My quotes come the author Douglas Adams'hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.

Come on, Mr Dent. You can't win you know. You can't lie in front of the bulldozer indefinitely.

I'm game, we'll see who rusts first!

  14. We're bilingual at our house. We speak English and Movie Quotes. The Princess Bride is always quoted. Mel Brooks and Monty Python movies roll off the tongue more often than not too. The Hunt for Red October pops up pretty often as well.

And like D.G. above, Fawlty Towers is quoted a bunch at Chez Quinn. "I'm going to give you a damn good thrashing!" (John Cleese declares to his dead car, then beats the hell out of it with a tree branch.) Classic stuff.

    Fun post, Sue
