I may have mentioned on this blog how much I enjoy the TV show, Once Upon a Time both as entertainment and for the amazing writing and plotting in the program. The characters are fairy tale characters ripped from their enchanted worlds where magic is common to our world where they try to cope with the histories they shared in that other world. The writers do an excellent job of creating terrible villains and then exploring what turned that character undo their evil path. And many times redeeming the bad guys. The fairy tales they explore are usually based more on the origin tales rather than the Disney animated interpretations. And no one is a perfect, sin-free hero either. Family
Lesson: People still enjoy the retelling of classic fairy tales. Those classics can be twisted and retold to make them fresh and interesting. Making villains complicated and sympathetic adds depth and emotion to stories. Don't make the heroes squeaking clean or too perfect.

I never got hooked on the show, but then again, I'm hooked on enough shows right now.
I never managed to get into this show, but I know a hell of a lot about the romances thanks to Tumblr ;) Fairy tales are wonderful and I hope they are still as popular as when I was small. I always thought the writing on Firefly was superb. Book or movie - Thor 2 - hello Loki - he's kind of redeemed, at least as far as Thor is concerned :)

Never tire of fairytales! I'm always amazed at how the next and the next and the next generations add their own updated twists. As you said the writers are brilliant and clever with their twists and turns on classic fairytales. Who can possibly not take a look at a story that starts with "Once upon a time...."!!!

Love TWISTS on fairy tale. Something that WE ALL can relate to because WE ALL grew up with them. So giving them a new and fresh twist is such a great idea. Cool to see what talented writers can glean from a classic and spin it into something exciting and different.
I LOVE Once Upon a Time and I'm a huge fan of Captain Hook. ;) Ever since I was little I've been fascinated by fairy tales so I enjoy retellings.

I tried getting into this but the first few episodes couldn't pull me in. I'll have to give it another shot at some point. :)
I say that to myself all the time. With summer coming, I'll only watch TV for a rare hour here and there.
Lots of fairy tales being made into movies recently. I think it has to do with the popularity of the TV show.
I think lots of the newer remakes are making the heroine stronger and less dependent of rescue by a prince.
Those are my favorite characters, Hook and Regina. Both seeking redemption.
And each time they're retold someone puts their own spin on it.
My daughter and I always watch it together even when we're in different states.
Being a fan of Hook shows good taste. Love the fall of an honorable man and then his redemption.
Many of the new twists are about making the princesses smarter and stronger. They rescue themselves.
I love how they make even the bad guys so sympathetic.
It's worth the time to watch it.
Yes, I wanted to use that for O, but had to stick to characters in my books, oh, well I suppose all my posts are 'once upon a time... ' :0)
Fairy tales are timeless. People will always have ways of interpreting them from now until the end of time, I think. Great post!

I love Once Upon A Time, but I stopped watching halfway through this season, when Elsa turned up. I don't know, I think they went a bit far from the original storyline. I'll catch up on Netflix though, I think.

That is a good way to look at it.
The Elsa storyline was okay and got better as it went. The better part of that story was what Rumpel was doing in the background. He's so evil.

1) I really like this show. The twists keep coming. In fact, I love the fact that Regina has become my favorite character on the show. She's not the only one who hopes she gets her happy ending:)
2) The song to that Grey's Anatomy clip on my HERE'S TO YOU is actually Run by Snow Patrol. I featured it because Dixie has Snow Patrol going up against someone else WITH THAT SONG in her current Battle of the Bands. If you go back, you can click the link to her blog and vote.
Haven't watched that show. I like the idea of retellings. I've yet to try it though.
I always prefer more complicated villains. Fairy tales especially could use some extra characterization all around :)
I have not seen this show but have heard good things about it. I do think fairy tales will be around for a long time; people like the concept of "happily after" in most of their cases.

I'm sure each generation is enthralled by Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. I love how the movies have created such spectacular re-telings.
I agree with you, Susan. I love what the writers have done with these old fairy tales. They've made them come alive with fresh ideas and themes. Not to mention how wonderful the actors are. Great choices, indeed.
This is one show I tried to watch but I just don't have the time.
I've been seriously debating watching ONCE on Netflix.. I have it on my watchlist... you've thrown me over the edge.. .I'll give it a shot once I finish Bloodline (an *amazing* drama, by the way :)

I love fairytales and any kind of fairytale re-telling! I haven't watched Once Upon A Time yet, but I keep meaning to. At the moment I'm really into Supernatural which, although it isn't about fairytales, does challenge your perceptions of different supernatural creatures and the concept of family, and how far you'd really be willing to go to save those you love.
Love this show! I've even designed a cross stitch pattern based on the characters :D
I enjoyed the first part of Once. And I liked how the opening images gave hint to the story ahead.
I always meant to start watching this show. Maybe I will binge watch one day. It does sound interesting.
