X: X-Files

My theme for the A to Z Blogging Challenge this year is a mishmash of books, movies, writers and TV shows that have in one way or another taught me something about writing and helped me be a better writer. Some inspired my own stories and a few taught me what not to do. Each post is a one minute lesson on writing. Also stop by the IWSG blog for some writing inspiration for April.

This one if for your Heather M. Gardner. The TV show, The X-Files, broke new ground on TV. It was a strange show with a dark atmosphere, some dark humor and opened the door for all kinds of speculative fiction. It also was a show that gave new meaning to faithful (didn't say rabid, Heather) fans and one of the most
infamous 'ships' in TV history as fans wished for Mulder and Scully to get the romance thing going. The duo investigated all types of strange phenomenon that may or may not have to do with paranormal or alien influences. This show opened the doors for such favorites to come like Supernatural, True Blood and other shows of speculative fiction. If you want to know more about The X-Files please visit Heather M. Gardner.

Lesson: Humanity speculates about the unknown. Readers as well as TV viewers enjoy all kinds of speculative fiction so let your imagination soar. Try to think of something unique. Some romance and sexual tension can add depth and raise the stakes in a story. Even if writing a dark story, a little humor adds something to the tale.

Scully: Mulder, toads just fell from the sky!
Mulder: I guess their parachutes didn't open.

Scully: You have seen this before, I can tell. You lied to them.
Mulder: I would never lie. I willfully participated in a campaign of misinformation

Mulder: You know, they say when you talk to God it's prayer, but when God talks to you, it's schizophrenia.

Do you believe in aliens? Were, are, you a fan of The X-Files? What was the best part of the series, the humor, the relationship, the plots or the spooky atmosphere?

We were big fans back in the day, but it's been so long, I hardly remember anything but select characters like the Lone Gunmen and Cancer Man.

I wrote about the X-Files too! God, I loved that show. I think it's on Netflix. I should re-watch it, back when they first showed it, I didn't see all episodes.

I was a huge, still am, XFiles fan but I came late to the show. My senior year college roommate (93-94) introduced me to the show and I became hooked. I think it was the fact that Mulder was so serious, the show was serious and his partner really wanted to believe but her scientific mind always had an explanation. Usually. Also, the ongoing mystery with Mulder's sister always left you hanging and hoping that the next episode would have THE answer to her disappearance. Oh, and the series finale? I remember screaming and calling my best friend on the phone and talking about that scene for days!
The characters all had a chemistry between them, the story lines were different than anything else on tv. I was in Newbury Comics the other day and there was the "I Want To Believe" poster. I would buy it and I'm now in my 40s! I am a good parent and introduced my children to this series, which seems to be the precursor to "Supernatural".
Thanks for a great post. I'm visiting from the A to Z Challenge.

I am a HUGE XFiles Fan as well. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Though I was pissed when they put out the Scully and Mulder dolls because those weren't Scully and Mulder, rather they were just Barbie and Ken. Big whoop.

Have a great day and boogie boogie.

I also love that David won a comedic award because he was funny.

The unknown is always fun to explore and write about.

I feel like I'm the only one who never watched the X-Files...

X-files is a big choice today. I never got into the show but it was big back in the day. Aliens could exist.

Not sure whether I believe in aliens or not. Never given them much thought. I love to read about them in speculative fiction though. :)

I hope the producers of the new mini-series are aware how hot their show is on the AtoZ!

My daughter and husband just got done watching the whole series on Netflix and Amazon Prime. After that, they watched both movies. Next up is the Lone Gunmen.

I find it hard to believe we're alone. But I also think that I need to see to believe.

I remember watching a few episodes...
The unknown is scary... and full of "possibilities" (both positive and negative I'm sure)
How can there be no other life forms?
There has to be something out there. Though I'm not sure in what form it would exist...

I waited 9 seasons for them to get together. Then when they were finally a real couple, it was in that terrible second movie.

I used to LOVE the X-Files when it was all about UFO's. Then it got creepy and I couldn't watch anymore.

Wow, I thought I had already commented on this post. :( I remember watching the episode with Crycheck (?) and how he was bleeding tears over some strange object that absorbed them. Do you remember that one? Or have I gotten my wires crossed? That is the most disturbing thing I've seen out of all the Xfiles and canNOT get it out of my head when I hear... Xfiles. lol

Loved the X-Files and I was so surprised when I read they are making a new limited series. I know I'll be parked in front of the tv for that.

Yes I believe in aliens, whether they are poking around humanity, however, is up for debate ;). I used to love the X-Files, at least the early seasons. I gave up when it started to become aliens only.
