Appreciating the Job

My oldest son is a teacher and coach, following in the my path as well as that of his father. He coaches high school football and we love watching him at his job. He loves the sport and his players and you can see they love him back. It makes fall very enjoyable. When asking him about his coaching schedule for this week, he reminded me that he has two days of inservice. Inservice days are those hours teachers spend at meetings where hopefully planning and learning take place. As most teachers know, they're generally dreadful days. And I'm so grateful that I don't teach anymore or have to go to inservice. This September will mark the start of my fourth year as a full time writer. And I still love it.

My first year of full time writing, I wrote pretty fast. I've slowed down a little but I'm doing more in the business of writing and more with writing groups. My current WIP is taking me FOREVER. But a few plot lines clicked into place this past week and I figured something out that was bothering me about one of my characters. I expect the pace to pick up from here on.

"Be not afraid of going slowly, be afraid of standing still." Chinese Proverb

Did you notice the Halloween candy and fall decorations in the stores? No! Summer is still here. I'm so bored with TV, that I'm looking forward to the start of the fall season. I'm not looking forward to
all the election crap that will also be on TV and the ridiculous things that will be said.  Last weekend, my daughter and I binge-watched the extended versions of The Lord of the Rings. Still cried when Frodo said goodbye at the end.

Last time I asked for suggestions on what to watch, you wacky readers turned my onto Stranger Things. I then talked my children into watching it. My 25 year old son said he's had some really bad dreams about it. I'm not into watching scary movies or shows but Stranger Things was different enough that I really liked it. So nothing scary, but what should I watch next?

This is the first September for me when I have no children attending school or college. I don't miss those tuition payments. For those of you with younger children who you hope to send to college ... good luck. But what I do miss is shopping for all those cool school thingies. New pens, pencils, clips, notebooks and all that lovely stuff that is so cheap this time of year. And I don't need any of it.

Are you getting ready for back to school or getting a child ready? Have a show for me to binge on Netflix or even a good movie I might have missed? Are you in love with your job? Anything you're looking forward to with the coming of fall?

  1. My late husband used to coach young children soccer and my youngest son went on to be a pro. soccer player. We were so proud watching him play. The his ankle got kicked in stead of the ball.....exit playing soccer.
Halloween? I've seen Christmas cards in the shops.
Why are shopkeepers in a hurry to let go of summer.
    Have a good week.

  2. Glad your son really enjoys it.
Told you Stranger Things was cool.
I need to find something new to watch now that the Olympics has ended...

  3. If Halloween candy is out, I need to start stocking up on mellow cream pumpkins. It's the only time of year I can find them.

    I love that Minion quote!

  4. A great profession is being a teacher, sounds like your son enjoys it and is good at it. I am struggling with my job these days, but at 58 years old, not sure what to do about it. I am amazed we are close to the end of summer. Where did the time go?

    1. I think my son witnessed how much his parents loved being teachers and that inspired him.

  6. I do love my teaching job, but the inservice days can be very, very long!!
How about Firefly or Fringe - 2 of my all time favourite shows!

    1. Great recommendations, Jemi. I already watched Firefly and Fringe though they're always good for a rewatch.

  7. Stranger Things was fantastic! Right now, my husband and I are watching season 2 of Daredevil. This year I didn't have to do any school shopping for my son. The school provided a kit with all supplies at a discounted price. It saves families a lot of money, but it does take away the fun of shopping for supplies. And yes, I did see the Halloween stuff out. Ridiculous!

  8. Yeh for Stranger Things! I've got a huge lineup of stuff on Netflix/Hulu/iTunes, but haven't really settled on anything - nothing is grabbing me. Been watching old episodes of The Middle and Big Bang and Seinfeld, especially when I need a laugh.

Love the proverb and the Minion pic!

We binged Enterprise recently. It's been a long time since we watched it.

  10. I love the Chinese saying! I keep seeing Stranger Things come in posts, maybe it's a sign.

Congratulations on getting your kids through college. I don't know how anyone manages.

  11. Now I really want to see Stranger Things. That's all people can talk about lately. Well, that and the election, but that's awful and soul crushing, so I plan on tuning that out with Stranger Things.

Also, isn't it great when you suddenly get a realization about one of your characters, and then the story just all seems to make sense, and you start writing like crazy? Funny how the brain almost inhibits our progress when it knows deep down that something's just a little bit off. Good luck from here on out!

  12. There was surprisingly little Halloween candy until recently. Last year, I swear they were putting it up by the end of July. And I watched Stranger Things after the last time you mentioned it. I thought it was awesome. Sci-fi, Horror, and Mystery stories all together!

    1. Stranger Things also had a wide range of generations involved in the drama. Kids, teens and adults so it appealed to everyone.

  13. I taught high school for about five minutes. The students got out early every Wednesday. We spent that time in meetings. Never ending meetings. I never had a chance to accomplish anything because I was always in worthless meetings.

  14. yay for your coach/teacher son - we need more good examples in those roles!
I binge watched The Matrix series, Avenger movies, et al, the Hobbit movies, and the Shrek movies this summer =) And here are some series I have enjoyed - Mad Men, Game of Thrones, my son likes the Flash, and Firefly is a classic. I heard Mr. Robot is excellent, but havent watched it yet... I would binge watch again! I don't watch much tv because i'd rather create! but i do watch sometimes!

  15. Hi, Susan,

LOVE the Chinese proverb.... It is so true.

This fall I'm looking forward to cooler weather, NOT COLD, just cooler. My puppy's first birthday, and FINISHING my Loft rehab... about two more weeks of work. UGH... this WAS painful, costly, and time consuming.... Then OFF to Florida from Thanksgiving to May... working on my place there. Never a dull moment.

AND HOPEFULLY get some decent writing in....

I don't really watch TV... For me it's all about the comedy reruns... LOVE BIG BANG THEORY, and the Classic like I LOVE LUCY, GOLDEN GIRLS, and MASH....Oh and for family humor, MAMA'S FAMILY... LOL

In times of stress, I need comedies.

  16. I walked by my first display of chrysanthemums yesterday (New England's "Welcome to Fall" plant of choice) and I wanted to cry. Overnights are getting chilly, and I know what's coming. That said, here, the last two weeks of August and the first two in September are the best of the whole year, so I'm trying to enjoy them. We will be welcoming our daughter home from the deep South this week, and then getting her settled in her new college apartment in Providence. I am happy for her, but I must say, I'm dreaming of the day when there are no more tuition payments.

  17. Have you watched Bloodline on Netflix? It's dark family drama with mystery and murder, two seasons are there. It think it's excellent.

  19. It's the first fall where i don't have a kid in grade school or high school. Bigger Girl is still in college, and Little Girl will start when she gets back from her military training. Still in school, but big enough to get their own supplies. No, i don't miss trying to find supplies in the aisles with screaming kids and no more of the "cool" lunchboxes left.

  20. I love being a full time writer and I love being home. As for Netflix binges, my current favorite is LONGMIRE, but I also recommend HAPPY VALLEY and TOP OF THE LAKE.

  21. We loved Stranger Things. I also really loved TNT's THE LAST SHIP. It's a lesser known show. I really should blog about all the insanity happening around here, but I can't find the will or brainpower--if you know what I mean. The last week I've been in the car a minimum of 3 hours a day, so I think it's fair to say I'm in the "Taxi" stage of parenthood, and ready for it to end. =)

  22. I love the Big Bang but its sitcom. My mom loves The Last Ship. Lately, I've been watching random movies. Its hard to find anything on tv worth watching. I don't like police, legal or hospital dramas and theres a ton of those. My kids all went back and I didn't enjoy buying tissue, glue and pens. LOL. I felt bad that I'm at the point where I hate school. Especially since I loved it as a kid all the way through. Not so much as a parent. Feels like I'm going again but without the cool parts

  23. The back to school shopping frenzy is underway here but I've gotten most of my stuff already. These days, I'm watching mostly crime drama, with too many re-runs. :(
