J: In an earlier post I mentioned how my father seemed to know something about everything. He could fix things, mechanical and building wise, and he could even cook. I admired him greatly and believe he was part of a disappearing breed.
But as writers, there's also a growing need to become a jack-of-all-trades in the writing business as my father was in his business.
First and foremost, we must be story tellers. If there's not a good story, none of the rest matters. If you write non-fiction, then there must be expert-backed facts written in an appealing voice. At one time, this first part could be almost enough to make you a success. But with the competition in today's market, a writer must be so much more.
Even the most clever and witty story teller must able to self-edit. The basics of grammar and spelling must be followed if a writer wants anyone to look at their work. At one time, an agent or an editor might work with a great spinner of tales to improve that part of their work. It's not likely to happen now. A few mistakes on the first page of manuscript and an agent or editor won't even look at the second page. A writer must be an editor and a good one at that. A writer needs others of their ilk to read their prose before they try to get it published and must be willing to return the favor.
If a writer is fortunate and hard-working enough to be published, more jobs are piled onto their load. Now they must be a promoter, a publicist, and sometimes it feels like a beggar also. It has become the writer's job to bring attention to their book. Sometimes it seems like more hours are spend on this chore than on actual writing.
Public speaker, appearing at conferences, participating in online opportunities, are all part of promoting your writing, but it is also a satisfies another expectation of the writing business. Passing on what you learned and being a mentor for those finding their own way through this ever-changing world of writing.
Lastly, a writer must also possess some business sense. From keeping track of income, expenditures and writing off the kitchen table as your office space on your taxes, just kidding, a writer has to realize they are involved in a business, not just a hobby.
What job of a writer did I miss? Do you feel confident about your writing to call yourself a jack-of-all trades?

Insecure Writers: Making Connections

I feared I wouldn't be able to think of interesting subjects to write about and still follow the advice of keeping it short and to the point. I prepared my first week of posts and held my breath until the first day of posting. I couldn't access my blog from my day job at that time, so I couldn't get into action until I came home in the late afternoon. Imagine my delight when I logged on and found dozens of comments on my post, a dozen new followers and it was only the first day! I spend all evening visiting all sorts of new blogs. It was wonderful.
It did get tougher near the end of the month when my life got a little busier and I didn't have all my posts ready. But I learned from it and am jumping in with all ten fingers dancing across the keyboard. I feel more secure about my ability to be a blog people will like. I'm not so worried about keeping up and measuring up. There will be more experienced and more interesting bloggers on the A to Z than me, but I feel like part of the community. All because I took the challenge last year.
So if you want to increase your blog readership, make some connections and build your web presence, you have to take some chances. Dive in. Join A to Z Challenge or some other type of blogfest promotion. Like this monthly Insecure Writing Blogfest. Don't worry about being the best or the brightest. We're all in the race together.
Do you feel secure in taking on promotional challenges? Are you secure in your blogging or do you worry over your content and audience?

May the Sun Shine on My Friends

I've been the lucky beneficiary of some blog awards from my friends. Some of these wonderful people I only know from our communications online and some are fellow writers belonging to the same writers groups as I do.
Let me put a plug in here for CPRW, my local RWA group. We meet once a month to share knowledge, encourage each other and laugh a lot. The Susquehanna Writers is a sub-group within Pennwriters. Cate Masters glues us together on our blog and honored me with this latest blog award.
Now before you say, enough already with the blog awards, remember how they help link us all together, bring new readers to your blog and remind us to visit our colleagues online often.
The Sunshine Award is perfect for the northeast this weekend since we're supposed to have heavy rain on Saturday and a chance of flooding. Keep the warmth going, think spring and use the rainy days to write and read. If you receive the award, no need to make up funky lies or confess outrageous truths. Just pass it on to up to 12 fellow bloggers.
Vicky Burkholder- she better save a copy of her new release for me
Vicki Smith- she has a very entertaining life
Ava Quinn- I know what she'll be up to when the sun returns
Megan Hart- My daughter tells me Megan looks like a writer and I only look like a mom.
Natalie Damschroder-my 'go to' girl. If you know you know what I mean.
Jemi Fraser- she always has something interesting to say. Where does she find time?
Jarmara Falconer - I hope it doesn't lighten up her dark words too much.
No hurry friends to pass this on but I look forward to seeing who you give it too. I find most of my blog friends through links on other bloggers' pages.

Where and When of Blogging
I go through fits and starts with my blogging. On rare occasions I've had periods when I believe I have something to say everyday. I have a friend who does say something entertaining almost every day and I find that pretty inspirational. Then there are times when I'm deep into a project and can't seem to think of one little tidbit worth sharing. I know readers of my blog don't expect to learn the secret to publishing success and how to win the lottery against all odds, but I try to say something of some value or at least an interesting read.
So when should one post something? I tend to avoid controversy on this blog so you won't see any great last word on ebook vs traditional, taxing the rich vs the middle class, or even paper or plastic.(I use cloth reusable bags)
I do blog when I have a new work to promote or some other writing milestone, but many days I search the echoing emptiness of my creative cortex and find a blinking cursor on a blank white page. And I've fallen into a habit of blogging about once per week on either Monday or Tuesday whether I have anything wonderfully original to say or not.
During the summer months, I blog from my home computer but soon I'll be back at school. I'd like to blog on my lunch hour from work. But should I? Use of my computer at school is strictly monitored. So I might not.
I'm sure most people who read my blog have their own blog going. How often do you write a new post and when do you do it?
