IWSG: July 2019

Slow down, 2019! It's the first Wednesday of the seventh month meaning the year is more than halfway gone and it's IWSG blog hop day. Thanks to Alex J. Cavanaugh, the online writing community of Insecure Writers Support Group is going stronger than ever. Find the entire list of participants here.

First of note, thank you to the IWSG administrators for spotlighting me in the most recent newsletter. You really brightened my day.

Second of note, thank you to the administrators for all they do. I was once among their numbers and there is a massive amount of work that goes on behind the scenes of IWSG to make sure the group remains dynamic and offers so many FREE services to writers. I'm on the board of another writing group and I'm currently buried under responsibilities to help run that group. Anyone who volunteers in such a way, sacrifices a lot of their own writing time to give to other writers.

Third of note is the monthly optional question:
What personal traits have you written into your characters?
Are we supposed to do that? LOL I do write my characters to have qualities that I hope I have. Loyalty, honesty, and love of family. Add an burdening sense of responsibility and you have a too perfect character. (Not that I'm perfect or even close) So, always add a helping of traits I hope I don't have. Mistrust, wariness of relationships, and of course, the damage that caused all that.

Fourth note for today, I apologize for not haunting the blogs I usually do. About twelve days ago, I had knee replacement surgery so I've had trouble sitting at my computer for any extended period of time. No worries, I feel great. My top-notch surgeon used high tech robotic surgery. I was in pretty good shape going in. Surgery at 10 am. Woke up at noon. Got out of bed at 2 pm with the nurses' help. Went home the next day at noon. Six days later and I was walking without any assistant devices like a cane or walker. 30 staples are coming out today and then it's just a matter of finishing physical therapy. Unfortunately, my new knee is not bionic and I can't run 60 mph.

Is the year flying by for you? Have any fellow writers or bloggers you really appreciate? Does your personal character show up in your fiction writing? Would you be comfortable with a robot wielding the knife in the operating room?

A friend of mine also had knee replacement surgery and while her recovery was very slow, she's so much better now.

That's amazing about your surgery! And you're amazing for how well you're doing! :)

Fellow writers or bloggers I appreciate? The IWSG, of course! :)

The year is definitely going by fast.

My mom had her knees replaced, so I know how hard that can be. I hope your recovery goes smoothly.

Glad you did well after surgery and are making a great recovery! I would think one would write their traits into characters. I said similar on Pat's blog. You know yourself the best so why not use that to your advantage?

You're recovering so well from the surgery! A family member just had this done and while she's in great shape and doing everything right, she's having a few more challenges. Hope all keeps heading in the right direction!

Speedy healing of your new knee!

Thank you for all of the work you did for IWSG. I can only imagine the amount of effort, and I really appreciate it.

A few other posts mentioned adding traits we aspire toward in our characters, and I like that idea. Maybe our characters represent our best possible selves at times.

It might not be bionic, but the new knee sounds pretty good. Honestly, I'm glad the year is flying by. I'd like it if it could fly by a little faster.

Get better soon and yeah, I'd like to think we do the same things when assigning traits to our lovely players. :-)

Hi Susan,

Glad to hear you surgery went well... You'll be running around soon!

I certainly put my traits in my characters. Passion of almost every kind for one. Humans live with emotions daily and learning how to deal with those emotions makes for 'interesting' reading....don't you think? LOL

Great that the surgery went well and that you are healing up well. Writing qualities that you hope you have kinda counts, right?

Glad you had a successful surgery! Hoping your recovery goes smoothly.

So glad to know your surgery was a success, and i can imagine it would be a temptation to put some of your own favorite traits into characters you like and maybe your least favorites into characters you don't like!

Sounds like your surgery went very well, Susan. I had one done in 2015 and it works great. Probably will get the other done before the end of this year. It's amazing what can be done to help us stay mobile.

Oh, that burdening sense of responsibility! My main character and I have it too! LOL.

I'm so glad your surgery went well!

I tend to make my characters into someone I wish I could be more like. I guess I'm just living through them and their adventures.

I'll probably have to have my knees replaced someday, just like my dad did. You make it sound a lot more bearable. Just keep writing.

Congrats on making it to this side of surgery. Good job on a swift recovery. So...are you sure you can't run 60 MPH? I mean, have you tried? How will you know if you don't try? But not too soon! Let that new knee fully settle in first.

Diane Burton said...

I've had both knees replaced. Congrats on your recovery. Sounds like you're doing great. Best wishes.

Glad you had a speedy recovery. If the robot was programmed well, it might well be safer than a human.
