IWSG: October 2024

Hello all and happy fall. Time for our monthly blog hop. Thank you to the admins of the Insecure Writers Support Group who keep this show running. And a special thanks to our founder, Alex J. Cavanuagh, who saw the need for writers to share their woes, experiences, and expertise.

Today's optional question:

Ghost stories fit right in during this month. What's your favorite classic ghostly tale? Tell us about it and why it sends chills up your spine.

I don't think I have a favorite ghost story. I'm not into ghost tales. One of my favorite uses of ghosts in a movie is The Lord of the Rings when Aragon called on the ghosts who had betrayed his ancestors and they fought beside him to save Gondor. They were cooler in the book, but the movie did a pretty good job.

“Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.” - Stephen King

This month is my blog's anniversary. I shared my first blog in 2008. The blog-o-sphere was a much busier place then and I blogged three times a week. I don't know how I kept that up and still had time to write. In the years since, three bloggers I felt close to passed away. It was an odd sadness when I had never spoken to those people in person. More bloggers have just stopped blogging. I haven't. Yet. And there are enough friends still active to keep me here.

On the other hand, there are some blogs that thrive and grow. One of those is Terrible Minds by Chuck Wendig. He does a lot of promo for his own successful books but also for other writers. He also blogs about a lot of things important to writers. Here is his opinion on the NaNoWriMo fiasco. And then his take on Generative AI. I read most of his content.

Finally, some new stuff on TV. I'm watching the Rings of Power on Amazon. It moves so slow sometimes and has so many story lines, but it keeps me interested. I'm going to catch up on the new season of Tulsa King on Paramount, and The Old Man on Hulu. I guess I'm feeling my age that I'm enjoying shows where the main characters are old folks.

I hope whereever you live, you're getting some sunshine today. We're on our 11th straight day of clouds, drizzle, and endless rain. I know we need rain and some people like rain, but I would be happy in the desert. And I have relatives in the south who are fortunately all safe, but I feel for all those who were in the path of the recent hurricane.

"Keep your face always toward the sunshine and shadows will fall behind you." Walt Whitman

Do you enjoy ghost stories? How long have you been blogging? Is there a good informative blog you follow faithfully? Did the recent storms impact you?

I am a few months behind you. I started in February of 2009 six days a week. Five days were essays and Saturday was a short recap of the week. I sustained that for several months but then slowed down, as we all have. Hope your rain stops and you get some dry. We could use some rain.

You started blogging 2 years before I was even born! Happy anniversay!!! It's only been one year since I started blog. I'm on IWSG and other than that, I post something to which my bestfriends comment. But still I understand how it's like to lose touch with some friends. Friendship doesn't even require to meet in real person. Such a beautiful world!

I began blogging a year after you did. Yes, sad so many have stopped and some passed on, like Jeremy and Lisa.
Enjoying Rings of Power but yeah, too many story lines.

With the ongoing fragmentation of social media, I think blogs are coming back into vogue as a way for people to better "own" their online presence. Congratulations on 16 years of blogging!

Congrats on your blog's anniversary! I remember posting three days a week back in the day. How?! :o

I liked the first season of The Old Man but will definitely need to rewatch it before starting season two.

Happy blogging anniversary! I think I've been blogging in one form or another since about 2003. The earlier efforts no longer exist, though.

I enjoy Chuck Wendig's blog very much. He's written some really great posts, and I really like how he supports other authors and the writing community as a whole.

I like light ghost stories, not much into horror. I've been blogging for a long while and see a lot of bloggers just disappeared and it's a bit sad to not read their blogs anymore. But there are still a lot of blogs still around.

Happy blog anniversary.

Have a lovely day.

Thanks for the link about NaNoWriMo. I participated for several years and it worked well for me then but I haven't heard much about it lately. As for sun, I live in Honolulu so aside from a bit of rain each day, it is all sun and 80+ degrees. I've been blogging since 2010 but not as much as in the early years. Now, IWSG and AtoZChallenge mostly.
My all-time favs are the chicken skin tales of marching spirits and ghostly appearances in Hawaii.

Wow, the bygone days of 2008, where there were so many other bloggers and events. It seems like so long ago. Happy blogiversary.

It's sad that some of our friends have passed away and others have faded from the blogging scene. But with things like IWSG, there are always stalwarts. The weather is so unpredictable from one day to the next. Not affecting where we are, but we had our own awful flooding in the UK.

I wish you many happy returns of your blog anniversary.

My favorite ghost tale is A Christmas Carol. It can certainly be spooky enough, when you think about it.
