A to Z Blogging Challenge: L

I'm sure lots of you are looking forward to a day off tomorrow even if you're really enjoying the challenge. I'm be using the day to catch up on more blogs I haven't visited yet from THE LIST for the A to Z Blogging Challenge. My continuing theme is a rendition of all the ways I'm going to advance my career as a full time writer after my retirement. (See countdown on right)

L: Library.  My county has a library system composed of a number of libraries joined together in one big organization. I can go on the website and find a book and request to have it delivered to the small branch library in my small town. Our little library is actually nearly brand new. Our town and surrounding community raised nearly two million dollars to have it built. It's friendly, peaceful and has some comfortable little nooks for reading or writing.

The library is a great resource for writers and readers. It's also a place that will host writers on panels and for book talks. When I enter my full time writing career, I'm going to find ways to make more use of my library and also ways to support the wonderful place. I'm also going to work to have them purchase the books of my writer friends for on their shelves. They do have my first fantasy book, The Keepers of Sulbreth, on their shelves. I need to get a picture of that.

Do you frequent your local library? What are some ways the library can help you as a writer?

We visit our local library at least once a month, when my daughter goes to book club. It's a new building, only been there a bit over 12 months, but we went to the old library before that.

I have two libraries that are close to me, and I frequent them both. I love browsing the books, or claiming a table at which to do some people-watching or writing.

We have a great library, here in town, and I'm ashamed to say I've only been there a few times.

I really should rectify that, though.

You do need to get a picture! Sadly, I don't visit our library often. It's not located in a convenient spot.

I don't spend enough time in the library these days. When I was a kid though, I lingered for hours looking at the shelves.

I got to our library all the time. It has a great area for the kids. I meet with my local critique group there.

Hi Susan,

Well I was without wifi for weeks and the library was a wonderful place for me to go to post my blogs and keep connected to blogger friends...

I love our local library. I was there today actually. I used to spend even more time there before my urchins reached school age. It has fantastic programs for kiddos.

Plus, it's where our writers' group meets. Gotta love that! And I can't wait for your triumphant return there this summer!

We also got a new library in the last few years. My daughter can't get enough of it. They let me host my book launch there recently, and though I got the impression it's not something they normally do (not many writers in my small town) and attendance was limited due to the blizzard that was happening at the time, the staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating.

I love libraries. In NZ I can go online, request a book, even one they don't have and they will buy it! I love that.

One way your library can help you is to get your book seen by people in your area you don't know. If you cultivate a friendship with your library they will probably be thrilled to have you do a reading and signing. Of course, they'll probably be thrilled anyway! I love my local library and I've begun giving them some of my books for their collection. This helps both of us. I get more room for more books and they get practically brand new books :)

Library was a popular L choice I see! I'm happy my local library carries all of my books.

I request a lot of books - I can have five holds at a time! - and then pick them up at our local branch. I also use the library for DVDs, too. We also donate a chunk of our books to The Friends of the library bookstore. :)

I'd love to see my books in a library!! That's the ultimate verification that you're a full blown author. I used to go to the library all the time in the UK but, sadly, there aren't so many in Portugal - and they're all filled with Portuguese books LOL

We have several libraries by our house, and I go to them often. They're like old friends; each of them have their own personalities.

I went more when my children were small, now I go here and there, I tend to buy my books more. Your little library sounds very nice.

Libraries are wonderful. I also enjoy using my local bookstore as a library, with their built-in coffee house. :) I do buy a couple of tech magazines when I do that, so I don't feel so bad.
